Biscuit Day celebrates historic Erie

Sept. 20 is Erie’s sixth annual Biscuit Day. It’s the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the Erie Historical Society. EHS president Sarah Wise said last year’s event raised more than $6,000 for the organization.

The Biscuit Day tradition goes back to the 1870s. “It was going for a few years when Erie was formed,” Wise said.

Erie was incorporated as a town in 1874. At the original Biscuit Day, there were fresh-baked biscuits and bowls of mulligan stew. Ladies ate free. “There were three or four bakers in town and they made the biscuits,” Wise said. “The women made the stew.” There was also homemade apple-butter and a variety of homemade jams and jellies at the event.

Most likely, Biscuit Day was one of the final community gatherings before the men returned to work in the coal mines. In Erie, the mines were closed in the summers because the particular type of coal that was mined in the area would disintegrate in hot weather.

Free talk on mining and its effects on community - Greg Sherman

Greg Sherman has the answers to many questions people have asked recently: What is a Coal Mine? What is subsidence? Why should I be concerned about subsidence? Why are developers concerned?

Greg is a certified gerologist who has been studying the effects of coal mining on the landscape and development. Among his many publications are “Geology and Mining History of the Boulder/Weld Coal Field” and “Assessment of Subsidence Damage to Existing Structures in Louisville, Lafayette, Colorado”.

To help us understand subsidence, the Erie Historical Society invited Greg to discuss this topic on Thursday, May 22 at 7p.m., at the Erie Middle School, Erie, Colorado. This event is sponsored by the Erie Historical Society so there is no charge, however donations are appreciated.

The Erie Historical Society opened the Wise Homestead Museum for the summer on Saturdays from 10 to 2. With the help of many people including a couple of groups of Questers many new items have been added. If you would like a tour at any other time please call Sarah Allene Wise, 303.828.4561 for an appointment. The Erie Historical Society invites everyone to come see what a home might have had at the turn of the century.

The major fundraising activity of the Erie Historical Society is Biscuit Day on Downtown Briggs Street. This year it will be Saturday,Sept. 20, 8 to 12 noon. Come have biscuit, gravy (or stew) sausage, juice/milk/coffee and wonderful conversation with others and enjoy the music. You will have time for browsing through many booths of arts and crafts. Raffle tickets will be available for the beautiful quilt and savings bonds of $100 and $50. The drawing will be at 12 noon.

I invite you to join us as a member of the Erie Historical Society and become involved in the preservation of the past for the future.

Historical Talk: Underground Railroad - Bonnie Carmody

Please join us Tuesday, February 26th at 7:00pm at the Erie Middle School Auditorium for a Historical Talk. Bonnie Carmody will be talking about the Underground Railroad. The talk will cover the reason for the underground railroad and the symbols used by the slaves to negoiate safe travel to the north. Ms. Carmody will have pictures of some of these symbols. She will not have the quilt she made but will show blocks from her next quilt.

Bonnie Carmody was born in Boulder and went to school in Lafayette. She has lived in Longmont for 15 years and is an active member of the Quilters Group.
The book she is using is written by Ms. Tobin “Hidden in Plain View”.

2007 Erie Biscuit Days

Saturday, September 15 was the fifth annual celebration of Erie Biscuit Days. The Erie Historical Society raised approximately $6,000 on this event. Our handmade quilt was raffled off, and the lucky winner was julia Birgen. A savings bond in the amount of $100 went to Karen Raush, $50 to Dorothy Keefer. A total of 645 raffle tickets were sold, raising approximately $1,200.

We thank all who visited the Wise Homestead Museum this summer. For this winter we will be closed except open by appointment.

We will be open next spring with additional exhibits and possible additional hours.
